Clacton Pier

Clacton-on-Sea in Essex has seen a mixed share of fortunes, once being the place to holiday, and latterly some degeneration. Its pier has weathered not only social and economic changes, but a lot of coastal climate battering too and still looks fairly good on the eye.  Such was the reason for taking this photograph and processing it to give just a little hint of those past days of glory, albeit with the modern day wind farms on the horizon.

Rarely do we encounter small parochial churches which take our breath away.  Recently we encountered two such churches, one of which is St. Mary-Le-Tower in Ipswich town centre.   As that church is easy to find and well featured elsewhere we have focused on the other church - St. Mary's in Lawford (Essex) - because of its off the beaten track location and sheer beauty, as seen above.

The church sits at the end of Church Lane, a dead end narrow road easily missed if you drive along the A137 too quickly. An obscured angled road junction does little to help find this lane.  As you drive down it you begin to wonder just how far you have to go, when suddenly the road terminates with a large gravel car park, indicative of the popular use this church receives.  Walking towards the church the unusual construction of the tower dominates your view and helps detract from any thought of the grandeur that awaits inside.

An absolute gem of a church, we highly recommend a visit.

Who would have thought a fairly small fallen branch could immobilise a car so effectively?  Measuring approximately 500mm in total length, the branch pictured above was laying on the ground in a narrow country lane.  Presenting no major obstacle, we drove over it giving it no further thought.  Approaching the end of the road a gear change was in order, only the gears now weren't changing!  Fearing the worst, a new clutch or gearbox, the car was limped back into town in 2nd gear.

A later inspection of the car revealed part of the branch sticking out from under the car.  An even closer inspection revealed the stubby end of the branch well and truly caught in the clutch mechanism, thus preventing gear changes.  We considered, very briefly, whether or not to call out the recovery services asking them to bring a saw.  Dismissing that idea, much grunting and cursing later the offending branch was free and the car (and driver) was smiling once more.  And the moral of this tale?  Don't change gear when driving over fallen branches!

It's very easy as a photographer to fall into the trap of just taking our usual style of photograph.  With the wealth of tools at our disposal in this electronic age we shouldn't be afraid to experiment with our photographs.  The photo here is a case in point.  It's of a rotting boat, where the primary boat colour was (or used to be) red.  The paint was peeling and flaking and it seemed to create a very busy looking image.   By desaturating the red, orange, and yellow tones we have been left with just the blue tones and a grey boat.  We think it works quite well.  Do you?

We couldn't resist posting a photo of this gorgeous black labrador puppy recently encountered on parkland in Colchester.  His name is jeff, he's 6 months old, and had boundless energy chasing a multitude of rabbits.  Getting him to pause, let alone pose, for a shot was quite an achievement in itself.  To get a shot with a setting sun and lovely colours was a bonus.  If the owners of Jeff, two French women we believe, happen to see this and would like to get in touch we'd love you to have a copy of this photo too.  Dogs - No wonder they're known as man's best friend!
