Twiglet of Trouble

Who would have thought a fairly small fallen branch could immobilise a car so effectively?  Measuring approximately 500mm in total length, the branch pictured above was laying on the ground in a narrow country lane.  Presenting no major obstacle, we drove over it giving it no further thought.  Approaching the end of the road a gear change was in order, only the gears now weren't changing!  Fearing the worst, a new clutch or gearbox, the car was limped back into town in 2nd gear.

A later inspection of the car revealed part of the branch sticking out from under the car.  An even closer inspection revealed the stubby end of the branch well and truly caught in the clutch mechanism, thus preventing gear changes.  We considered, very briefly, whether or not to call out the recovery services asking them to bring a saw.  Dismissing that idea, much grunting and cursing later the offending branch was free and the car (and driver) was smiling once more.  And the moral of this tale?  Don't change gear when driving over fallen branches!
